Struggling with a story

  • Mood:
  • Weather: Cloudy and freezing
How do you begin a story? What kind of stories do you like?

I'm trying to start a new one but I'm not sure what to make it about. So far I have a teen girl who starts her job at a clothing store, and there works an employee who will be jealous of her.

Any ideas or suggestions?

I suggest winning audience sympathy for that teen girl by having the jealous employee doing a series of not nice things she has to deal with that culminates in something really ratty. This person might make her look dishonest, get other people talking bad about her, etc.
I also suggest a counter-balance: what is her positive coping resource? Who does she turn to for advice. Perhaps she might try several sources of help with some advice not helping and some that does. Do you want to involve faith, counsel of local parish priest or pastor, teachers, school counselors, parents...etc. Who's the positive resource in her life.
last suggestions is: outline you story plan so you know where it's going and what the outcome is you to end on. (The outline, is classic writers advice.) There's a mystery writer, who's blog I read, and she squares off a poster board for her total chapters and writes the events for each chapter in a square to stay on track. She also writes a biography for each character that includes their education, what they like and don't like, their favorite foods, colors, style of dress, family history and strengths & weaknesses, etc so she can keep her characters consistent and on track.
Hope these ideas are helpful! Great idea you've got started.
